New design, new recipes and new director are on the menu at St. Francis Hospital & Health Services Hospital’s recently renovated cafeteria.
In remodeling the space, St. Francis wanted to update the design to be more modern, improve the flow of the serving line and revamp the tray return space. The menu has been modified to include new items as well as old favorites. The renovation also included the addition of a new Nutritional Services Director, Jessica Whaley.
The renovation project was primarily completed by hospital building operations staff. Changes to the color scheme, floor, ceiling and walls are readily apparent. The entrance to the cafeteria was enhanced with a large window near the enlarged doorway.
Another notable change is the expansion into the Hospitality Room, a meeting area adjacent to the dining room. With improvements to the collapsible divider between the two spaces, the doors are primarily left open to allow for more seating options.
“It really made the cafeteria more comfortable,” Cathy New, Vice President of Clinical Services said. “It was somewhat congested before and now offers our employees and visitors a very pleasant dining experience.”
The cafeteria, named The Bread Basket, now features a large, open room with a serving line for hot items as well as the salad and cold meat bar. The cashier station was moved during the remodel to improve the flow for both lines of service.
So far, the comments have been positive, New said, adding that the hospital is not trying to compete with local restaurants. “But if anyone wants to come, we certainly welcome them,” she added. “The goal is to offer our visitors and employees an inviting atmosphere in which to relax and enjoy a good meal.”
The Bread Basket accepts debit and credit cards and offers employees a pre-paid dining card option for meal payment. Its weekly menu can be viewed at stfrancismaryville.com. Funding for the renovation was made possible with support from the St. Francis Hospital Foundation, particularly the employee donors.
In conjunction with the cafeteria opening, a new director of Nutritional Services was announced in May. Jessica Whaley joined the staff May 30. She is a Northwest Missouri State University graduate with a BS in marketing and management. She previously worked in the catering department, then as marketing manager, and finally as associate director at Aramark Campus Dining at Northwest.
“Jessica’s previous experience is evident in both the variety of food now being offered, such as the fresh fruit and yogurt bar every morning, and in the presentation of meals catered to meeting,” New stated. “Staff is excited to visit the cafeteria to see what new offering is on the menu that day.”
The cafeteria is located on the basement level of the hospital. For more information, please call (660) 562-7933.
